The second book in the series, The Holmes-Dracula File shows you that he’s even a lying narrator because his perspective alternates with Watson and there are blatant and obvious lies such as the “accidental” killing of Sally’s Cousin. He doesn’t sugar coat what he was like back then. Just know when you get to Thorn (if you get to Thorn, that’s the fourth book in the series), you get a lot of Assholary in the fifteenth century. But do keep reading and take comfort in knowing he gets a little nicer as the story and follow up novels progress. The simple fact is he’s kind of a dick for a big chunk of this story and the character himself knows it. The Dracula Tape had a heavy influence on that movie. Have you actually seen the 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula starring Gary Oldman? Nearly all of this is in that film. The author knows there is a contradiction there. For crying out loud, he says of Lucy that his relationship with her is supposed to be casual and consensual and in the next breath he says she thought she was dreaming. You’re not supposed to be okay with everything he does. That was kind of the point, that he can’t really justify what he did to Jonathan or Lucy.

His behavior with her starts as manipulative but she sees right through him and he loves it. He hasn’t even spoken to Mina yet if you’re only an hour and a half into the audio book. She (I assume it’s a she) is about an hour and a half into listening to the audio book version (it’s eight hours long) and has come to the conclusion that Dracula is an asshole. I saw a post about The Dracula tape being reblogged on my Dash.Īpparently the person who recently started to read The Dracula tape by Fred Saberhagen (who obviously had been reading my own Tumblr but has me on block… go figure…) seem to have the wrong idea of what the story was supposed to be.
